In a stunning display of resilience and skill, British tennis player Sonay Kartal has reached the Wuhan Open final, marking the most significant achievement of her career. Kartal, who overcame Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets with scores of 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) on Saturday, demonstrated remarkable tenacity by rallying from behind in both sets and saving six set points.

Kartal’s journey to the final is particularly impressive given her recent return to the sport after a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. Since re-entering top-level competition this month, the 24-year-old has showcased her prowess on the court with victories over established players such as Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina.

Starting the tournament ranked world No. 170, Kartal has made history by becoming the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009. Her outstanding performance ensures she will break into the top 50 in the upcoming world rankings update, surpassing Katie Boulter as Britain’s top-ranked women’s singles player.

Reflecting on her semi-final match against Ostapenko, Kartal described it as one of the toughest of her career, applauding her own mental resilience for the victory. Her success in China signals a resurgence in her form, following her previous notable run to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2025, which was interrupted by injury.

In the other semi-final, Maja Chwalińska of Poland defeated her compatriot Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1. Świątek was hampered by a left-thigh injury, requiring a medical timeout and continuing the match with her leg bandaged.
