India and the European Union have taken a significant step towards cementing one of the largest trade partnerships globally by committing to expedite the finalization of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of the year. This development emerged from a trilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The leaders announced that the agreement would encompass a comprehensive range of areas, including goods, services, digital trade, investment, and technology cooperation.
The proposed FTA aims to establish a vast free trade zone that would connect nearly two billion people, contributing to roughly a quarter of the global economic output. Both India and the EU have also expressed intentions to broaden their collaboration in defense, connectivity, and strategic infrastructure projects, notably including the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor. This ambitious agreement is seen as a pivotal framework for enhancing economic integration between the two regions, particularly in light of evolving global supply chain dynamics.
