India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has decided to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester flights starting August 31, 2026. The airline attributes this suspension to ongoing airspace restrictions, extended flight durations, and escalating operational costs. These challenges are a part of broader international aviation issues, including geopolitical tensions, surging fuel prices, and disruptions in flight routes, which have collectively driven up the cost of maintaining long-haul services.
In light of this decision, IndiGo will return one of its six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which it had leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. This aircraft was part of a lease agreement established in early 2025, aimed at bolstering the airline’s expansion into European markets ahead of the arrival of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension, IndiGo emphasizes that its other long-haul international flights will continue to operate as per the existing schedule.
The airline’s foray into Europe has been met with robust customer demand, enhancing IndiGo’s footprint in significant international markets. However, the financial viability of the Manchester route has been undermined by increased flight durations due to airspace limitations, along with rising costs of aviation turbine fuel and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates. These factors have made it challenging for the airline to sustain the route economically.
Abhijit Dasgupta, IndiGo’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, expressed that the decision to suspend the service was regrettable but necessary given the current operational circumstances. He acknowledged the positive customer reception of the service and reiterated the airline’s commitment to resuming the route once the conditions become more favorable. Furthermore, IndiGo is actively exploring new avenues to continue its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways as it advances its long-term international growth strategy.
Passengers affected by this suspension will be informed in advance and provided with assistance, which includes alternative travel arrangements or refunds where applicable. IndiGo remains committed to ensuring minimal disruption to its customers while navigating these operational adjustments.
