Amid soaring diesel prices in the United States, President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries and facilities. Trump emphasized that these attacks are exacerbating a global fuel shortage, with diesel prices in the U.S. climbing to unprecedented levels above $6 per gallon. He advised Ukraine to redirect its military efforts away from Russian diesel infrastructure towards other strategic targets.
Ukraine’s military has increasingly focused on Russia’s oil and gas sectors, employing long-range strikes that have disrupted refining activities and contributed to fuel shortages within Russia itself. Compounding the situation, Moscow has imposed restrictions on its diesel exports, tightening the grip on international fuel supplies. The strain on the global diesel market has been further intensified by the conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted oil shipments through the vital Strait of Hormuz. According to the International Energy Agency, diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries in August plummeted to just over a quarter of their levels before the conflict.
Despite calls for restraint, Kyiv maintains that Russia’s energy infrastructure plays a crucial role in financing its military operations against Ukraine. Consequently, Ukrainian forces have persisted in targeting Russian oil facilities, including refineries and storage sites. At the same time, Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, with overnight strikes on Odesa and other regions leading to reported casualties and damage to both civilian and energy infrastructure.
The ongoing conflict has seen both nations engaging in large-scale drone warfare over the weekend, with Russian officials reporting Ukrainian strikes on industrial zones, and Ukraine claiming that Russian drones targeted residential and strategic infrastructure. As the United States nears its November midterm elections, the impact of the war on global fuel supplies and rising fuel prices is becoming increasingly significant.
