French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed support for the United Kingdom’s potential move towards closer ties with the European Union, following remarks by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Speaking in Madrid alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Macron highlighted the benefits of renewed UK-EU relations for both Britain and European countries.
Burnham recently indicated that the UK should explore various options for redefining its long-term relationship with the EU. These options include closer trading arrangements, joining a customs union, single-market membership, or even full EU membership in the future. Macron emphasized that any closer relationship would necessitate Britain accepting the rules and obligations associated with the EU’s internal market.
Pedro Sánchez also voiced his support for stronger UK-EU connections, reflecting a broader European openness to discussions about the relationship. EU officials have reiterated that the decision on how to shape future relations lies with the UK government, while the EU remains ready for talks.
The UK and EU are set to discuss their ongoing relationship at an upcoming summit in Brussels later this year. Macron’s comments underscore a significant European interest in re-establishing a more integrated partnership with the UK, a former key member of the bloc.
