The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has been pivotal in strengthening the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. This partnership is set to advance further with a focus on developing next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhancing Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, as Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite, VNREDSat-1 has exceeded expectations by remaining operational 14 years later, well beyond its initial five-year lifespan.
The satellite program has not only enhanced Vietnam’s capabilities in space technology but also enriched its expertise in satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, which equipped them with skills in system design, operations, and problem-solving. This has enabled them to independently manage technical challenges, marking a transition from reliance on transferred procedures to developing innovative solutions.
Moreover, Vietnam has established an integrated remote-sensing system that efficiently handles imaging requests, satellite control, and data management. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 images for various applications, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and national defense and security. According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a critical foundation for future satellite initiatives, though he emphasized the need for further advancements in satellite design, electronics, and software development to achieve greater technological independence.
The cooperation between Vietnam and France entered a new phase during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. This visit saw the signing of a declaration of intent by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies, signaling a commitment to long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are currently exploring options for a next-generation Earth observation system and the proposed VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborative efforts are anticipated to place a stronger emphasis on Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and software development. Vietnam aims to bolster its domestic expertise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and ground systems. The broader goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to autonomously design, operate, and develop future satellite technology.
