Macron Plans Ban on Unauthorised Protests Amid French Unrest

by admin477351

French President Emmanuel Macron has unveiled plans to restrict unauthorized protests as the country grapples with widespread civil unrest stemming from recent cost-of-living demonstrations. The government aims to restore public order following incidents of looting and violence that have marred the protests.

In a statement made after a meeting with intelligence officials and senior ministers, Macron emphasized that only demonstrations organized by recognized groups would be allowed to proceed, subject to legal requirements and potential route adjustments. Protests organized by individuals or groups lacking legitimate authority will face prohibition. This move is intended to safeguard city centers, businesses, and public infrastructure from further disruption.

Macron attributed the recent surge in violence to looters and groups he accused of trying to destabilize the French Republic. He reiterated that the government’s primary focus remains on restoring calm across the nation. To further address security concerns, a defense council meeting is scheduled to discuss additional measures ahead of upcoming nationwide demonstrations.

Authorities have already imposed restrictions in several cities, including Lyon, Marseille, Nice, and Toulon, while Paris has seen a mix of authorized demonstrations with restricted routes and outright prohibitions on planned gatherings. Businesses in these areas are taking precautionary steps in anticipation of potential renewed violence.

The ongoing unrest has led to a significant police response, with thousands of arrests reported since the disturbances began. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin noted that hundreds of individuals are facing prosecution, and some suspects have been detained. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has engaged in discussions with political leaders to seek their cooperation in resolving the crisis. Measures such as partial night-time curfews and restrictions on gatherings near government buildings and major transport hubs have been implemented to maintain order.

What began as protests over school conditions and staff shortages has evolved into a broader movement against rising living costs, resulting in strikes, blockades, and rallies across France. As public discontent continues to rise, the French government faces the challenge of balancing the need for public safety with the right to peaceful protest as it works to quell the unrest.
